Get ready to immerse yourself in three days of inspiration and learning at the 16th Meeting of the Spanish Network of Educating Cities from October 4 to 6, 2023!

Gijón/Xixón hosts the XVI Meeting of RECE under the theme “Educating Cities: Cities that Care and Welcome,” with the participation of over 200 representatives from 80 member cities.

On Wednesday, October 4, starting at 4:00 PM, participant accreditation awaits you, followed by the opening ceremony and the Inaugural Conference by Blanca Valdivia Gutiérrez. Afterward, there will be visits to the following educating resources and experiences: Municipal Council for Childhood and Adolescence and Child and Teenagers Participation Groups in Gijón; Park with Support: Playtime, Time for Yourself; Inclusive Sports Activities; Youth Association Open Until Dawn; Gijón’s 2nd Educational Project; Women’s Meeting House: Feminine and Plural Program; Miguel de Cervantes Public School: Working for Mobility; Social Museums; Institute Culture Center and School of Commerce and Popular University of Gijón

On Thursday, October 5, the day begins with the presentation of the conclusions from the Thematic Network “Transformation of the City (Urban Agenda) from and with the perspective of childhood and adolescence.” This network is coordinated by Rivas Vaciamadrid with the aim of creating a bank of inspiring experiences, conducting an analysis of indicators from the Spanish Urban Agenda, and generating a checklist that allows cities to advance/analyze their projects with a focus on the participation of children and teenagers.

Following this, the dialogue “Governance for Care in Times of Crisis” takes place, featuring the participation of the following mayors. The session is moderated by Cecilia Pérez Sánchez, President of the Asturian Federation of Municipalities:

The following are the conclusions of the thematic network “The Educating City in Training and Employment,” coordinated by Málaga. This network analyzed the relationship between training opportunities in each territory and the needs of the job market. The network’s work has resulted in the creation of the “Active City” web portal focusing on training, guidance, entrepreneurship, and placement. It is centered on the exchange of information and documentation between job seekers and professional talent hunters.

The day concludes with the dialogue “Cities that Welcome: Solidarity and Diversity,” featuring Marta Pascual Rodríguez and Olga Hurtado, moderated by Isolina Riaño Galán. Finally, participants have the opportunity to visit the following educating experiences: Mar de Niebla Foundation: Socio-educational Intervention in the West Zone; Youth Initiatives Center of La Calzada; La Serena Infant Education School; Second Chance School; Rosario de Acuña Secondary Education Institute; Gijón Science and Technology Park; Celestino Solar Citadel; Local Agency for Economic Promotion and Employment and Work Center for Art and Industrial Creation.

On Friday, October 6, there will be a presentation of conclusions from the Thematic Network “The Educating City against the Culture of Hate” (coordinated by Sevilla). The aim is to reinforce civic values, preventing social isolation, and simultaneously educating future generations in values and priorities to ensure social equity. As part of this effort, there has been a reflection on the role of Educating Cities in addressing the problem of the culture of hate. A debate has been initiated to guide municipal educational policies in combating it, and models of educational intervention have been proposed to facilitate the implementation of intervention programs by local governments. All of this is with the goal of enhancing empathy towards diversity in children and youth to counteract this social trend.
