On November 30th, we will once again celebrate the International Day of the Educating City, under the theme: “Children’s Participation in the Educating City”.

This year’s theme highlights the role of children as active citizens, with the right to be heard and to take part in decisions that affect their environment. In an Educating City, children are not merely recipients of services, but also protagonists in building a fairer, more inclusive, and more caring community. Many Educating Cities already offer training initiatives to promote active citizenship, as well as mechanisms for children’s participation in community life — whether through initiatives led by schools, community organizations, or municipal governments themselves (such as children’s councils, children’s parliaments, participatory budgets, and so on).

We encourage cities to take this opportunity to showcase existing participation mechanisms or to create new spaces that include the voices of children — with the goal of improving quality of life in our municipalities.
