With the theme Educating Cities: Sustainability, Creativity and Inclusion for an Active Citizenship, the 10th National Meeting of the Brazilian Network of Educating Cities (REBRACE) combined moments of debate and reflection, such as the Mayors’ Roundtable – which highlighted the importance of political leadership committed to education as a driver of urban development – and the inspiring lecture delivered by Professor Gina Vieira Ponte, who addressed critical perspectives for education in values and human rights, with reflections focused on issues related to violence against girls and women.

Over two days of intense programming, 24 Brazilian educating cities that are members of the International Association of Educating Cities (IAEC), along with seven non-member cities, shared 37 innovative experiences involving practices of sustainability, culture, social inclusion, creativity, and community leadership. The initiatives presented reaffirmed the commitment of Brazilian cities to the principles of the Charter of Educating Cities and to building more sustainable, inclusive, and participatory territories. The event also featured the presence of Laura Alfonso and Silvina Ortiz, representatives of the Latin American Delegation of Educating Cities, based in Rosario, Argentina.

The 10th Meeting also fostered the institutional strengthening of REBRACE, where non-member cities were able to learn about the benefits of joining the IAEC, as well as the pathways to membership. The REBRACE General Assembly was also held. These moments contributed to expanding dialogue and consolidating the educating cities movement in Brazil, reaffirming the commitment to a more humane and democratic public administration.

Guided visits to local projects and different spaces in the city also served as pedagogical experiences, in which the city itself became a learning space. The following guided visit trails were offered:

  • Spaces of sustainability and environmental management: Banhado da Vergueiro Park and Public School of Sustainability.
  • Sustainable urban infrastructure: Linear Park Avenida Brasil, Fredolino Chimango Sports and Leisure Center, and Public School of Sports.
  • Innovation in education and culture: Gare Park, Yamandu Costa Public School of Music, and Prisma Geek Space.
  • Innovation and entrepreneurship: Public School of Innovation (School of Professions), Business Alliance Hub, and Secretariat of Innovation.
  • Education and inclusion: Municipal School for Autistic Students Olga Caetano Dias and Public School of Traffic.

Cultural performances further enriched the event, bringing music, entertainment, and showcasing the cultural work developed in Passo Fundo.

The national meetings reinforce the importance of cooperation among municipalities and the ongoing exchange of knowledge to face contemporary challenges, offering opportunities to bring new references and inspirations to cities, while also strengthening collaboration among network municipalities and reaffirming the conviction that building fairer, more creative, and more sustainable cities depends on the permanent engagement of governments and communities.
