HORIZONTE: Embroidering Resistances: Embroiderers from Alto Alegre

The economic needs together with the desire for empowerment made the activity practiced on a daily basis by some residents of the community a promising project. The initiative was born out of the will of women living in the community and local and external social actors involved with the issue of racial and gender equality to support the organization of work and militancy in the quilombola community (with its origins in ancient slavery)

The project was born in the quilombola community of Alto Alegre in Horizonte through the mobilization of black women born in the community, black women from other locations and municipalities, local social actors, local government and other organisations, with the objective of promoting a space of collective dialogue with black and quilombola women, focusing on the recognition of ancestral culture and identity to strengthen gender autonomy, defence of rights and income production. The project consists of periodic meetings for the production of handmade embroidery.

All actions are designed and chosen with the agreement of the members of the collective, and always chosen in order to promote activities that bring the strengthening of the group, educational practice, the participation of women and other social actors interested in the theme.
