City located at the south-east of the Mediterranean isle of Sicily and bathed by the waters of the Ionian Sea. Having a millennial history, Syracuse was one of the main metropolis of the Mediterranean during the Greek and Roman Classic Era. The city is known for its rich cultural, architectonic and landscape assets and for being the cradle of famous mathematician Archimedes. Syracuse’s historic down-town was declared, along with the rocky necropolis of Pantalica, World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005.
