Its 49,693 inhabitants occupies a surface of 11,1 km², split in 2 parts: the old city, which is placed on a mountain over the Mediterranean Sea, and the modern neighbourhoods. In 1999, UNESCO declared the Old City together with the biodiversity of the island World Heritage Site. The architecture of the city with white houses with cubic forms is one of the identity signs of the city. The economic activity is oriented towards services and specifically to tourism.
