Elche has more than 235,000 inhabitants, which places it as the third most populous city in the Valencian Community. It is also known as the “City of the Lady”, because an Iberian sculpture of a richly dressed lady, made of limestone between the 5th and 4th centuries BC, was found there.
It stands out for having three masterpieces considered Intangible or Natural Heritage of Humanity: El Palmeral (a space of about 500 hectares with about 300,000 palm trees, the largest in Europe), El Misteri d'Elx (“Elche’s Mistery”, a theatrical work of a sacro-lyrical dramatic nature dating from the fifteenth century) and the Puçol School Museum (ethnological museum that collects pieces related to agriculture, commerce, industry, folklore and traditions of the municipality). In addition, Elche is home to three universities, which encourage a very active social and cultural life.
