San Cristóbal de Las Casas is the largest urban centre in the Los Altos de Chiapas region and the third most populous in the region, behind Tuxtla Gutiérrez and Tapachula. It has a population of more than 200,000 people.
Currently, it is a cosmopolitan city considered by some as the intercultural capital of Chiapas, as well as being the main tourist town in the State. In 2003, it was included in the Pueblos Mágicos (“Magic Towns”) program by the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) of Mexico, for its architectural heritage and cultural manifestations.
San Cristóbal de las Casas has an ethnic presence and a rich colonial tradition.
