The city has 36,119 inhabitants and owns its name to the amount of monk seals (In Portuguese lobo marinho, literally sea wolves) that had in the past. In the inland part of city, it is produced the renowned Wine of Madeira. Agriculture, fishing and Tourism are the main economic activities of the city
